Good Monday morning to you!

Are you a Republican? A Democrat? Or don’t you fully identify with either party? As Americans, we have a 25/31/41 split with one-fourth of U.S residents identifying themselves as Republicans, nearly one-third as Democrats and the largest portion as Independents, according to Gallup. But can you tell what party Americans belong to based on the food they eat, the vehicles they drive, or the music they listen to? Well, there are no absolutes, but multiple studies show that Republicans and Democrats do have definable differences in their lifestyle choices.

See someone who is seemingly always wearing a mask during this pandemic, and you will most likely find a Democrat. Find one who refuses to wear one, and you probably discovered a Republican. But the differences between Democrats and Republicans don’t stop there. I searched a dozen or so polls on the subject, and I found that the results, although maybe not surprising, are quite interesting and varied. See if you agree.

According to one study, if you drink lattes, drive hybrid electric cars or listen to indie rock, you are more likely to be Democrat. Another says if you own a cat or prefer vanilla ice cream over chocolate, you are likely to be a Democrat. And, from yet another poll, you are more likely to have sex, drink Corona beer and drive a hatchback if you have a “D” by your name. As far as jobs, you likely work for a company that employs 500 or more people if you are a Democrat.

As a Democrat, you are more likely to, among other things, view divorce, stem cell research, sex between an unmarried man and woman, having a baby outside of marriage, abortion, homosexual relations, and doctor-assisted suicide as morally acceptable. And you eat bagels.

On the opposite spectrum, Republicans, although having less sex than Democrats, reportedly have better sex. They are also likely to sleep better, drink Budweiser, own dogs and eat hamburgers. In terms of vehicles, if you are a Republican, you are more likely to drive a truck or a minivan. And small business owners tend to be Republican.

According to one of the aforementioned polls, a majority of Republicans say the death penalty, buying and wearing fur clothing, medical testing on animals, divorce and gambling are all morally acceptable. And they tend to eat donuts.

If all this holds true for Democrats and Republicans, then Independents must prefer Neapolitan ice cream, have fish as pets and use their mattresses for sleeping. As for Independents wearing masks, your guess is as good as mine.

Have a marvelous Monday, and thanks for reading.

Bleekers have a backyard oasis: Passionate gardener creates color

By Jackie Wilson

When Lynn Bleeker and her family moved into their West Des Moines home 20 years ago, the backyard resembled a “jungle” of shrubs.
Over the years, Lynn’s love of gardening transformed it into an oasis of peace, calm and rotating seasonal colors.

Her garden plants are thoughtfully spread out. Unlike an English garden, she prefers breathing room for plants, instead of having them crowded together. A variety of flowers bloom color for all three growing seasons, and she apologizes for the lack of color as her lilies just stopped blooming.
