Good Thursday morning to you!

How many lawyers are in the state of Iowa? If you guessed 7,306, you are correct, at least according to the American Bar Association. And if you estimated anywhere near that number, you should buy a lottery ticket.

In case you are curious, that means 23 lawyers for every 10,000 residents in this state. Does that sound like too many? Or not enough? Your answer likely depends on whether you need a lawyer right now or not.

For comparison, there are more than 36,100 public school teachers working in Iowa, about 4,270 plumbers, 1,610 dentists, and, in case you are truly curious, 337 newspaper publishers.

So do we need more lawyers? District Court Judge William P. Kelly says yes.

Kelly, who was appointed to the bench in October of 2015, is a proud proponent of lawyers and the legal system and touts the many improvements to our society as a result. He spoke to a Rotary group in Johnston earlier this week in one of the better programs I have seen. To make it interesting, Kelly told the Rotarians in attendance that they would be the jury. He then briefly presented three different cases with multiple choice answers that the jury could choose from as their decisions. This exercise helped those in attendance to understand the difficulty in choosing a fair and just penalty for those found guilty of committing crimes. Lawyers are an integral part of this process, Kelly argued. And he’s right.

Not that plumbers or dentists or school teachers or newspaper publishers aren’t important. They certainly all are. The services from lawyers cost a lot more than the services from the others, but that just stresses the need to save for those potential costs. Or you can buy another lottery ticket.

Have a thoughtful Thursday, and thanks for reading.

Fruit donation to emergency communication:
Schmiedlin helps provide for community needs.

By Lindsey Giardino

Grimes resident Bruce Schmiedlin not only keeps busy running his own tax practice, Bruce Tax & CPA, but he’s also an active volunteer, including serving as a Boy Scout commissioner and past member of the Disability Rights Iowa Board of Directors.

In honor of his service, the Iowa Society of CPAs recently awarded him their Month of Service Community Spirit Award, most notably for his donation of fruit to the Grimes Storehouse. Schmiedlin had an excess fruit harvest this past year — 326 pounds, in fact — which he picked, sorted and delivered to the local food pantry.

Schmiedlin says a lot of the volunteer work that he does happens in the background —work that goes unseen — but he doesn’t mind that in the least. For him, it’s all about helping others.
