Good Friday Morning to You!

Welcome to the Friday mailbag, where you will find comments, questions and ideas that were sent recently by many of you.

“Shane, I was reading your story about vanity plates or specialty/novelty plates (March 8, 2022). Yes, that is like a tattoo on your vehicle and that is exactly what a parent of a 16 year old wants. I have advised many friends over the years to give the gift of a vanity plate to their child on their 16th birthday. While they think it is ‘cool’ to have and to create their own special message, what it really does is advertise to the community whose vehicle it is. Why is this good? As a parent, you will know where your kids were, whether seeking mischief or not, and, oftentimes, before they get home.” – Jim

Aaah. Excellent points, Jim. Thank you. - Shane

“Love your column just the way you do. Even share it some days. Read it every morning. Hubby tells me Happy New Year every morning. (March 10, 2022). LOL Keep the newsletter coming just the way it is.” – Rose

I certainly will. Thank you, Rose. - Shane

“YES!!! I love that song and completely agree with your theory on enough hate and ugly in the world that we certainly don’t need any more! (March 10, 2022). I have a scripture on my desk that I see every morning: Be cheerful no matter what; pray all the time; thank God no matter what happens. … Have a great day!” - Ronda

Keep the positive vibes going strong, Ronda. We could all use them. - Shane

“Enjoyed your clock stories (March 17, 2022); reminded me of a grade school teacher I had. We went into her room one day — the clock was high on the left side wall — and taped over it was a large sign. ‘Time will pass — WILL YOU?’ ”

I love it. But that teacher would likely be suspended today for such a radical approach. - Shane

“I wear a Fitbit as my watch. My wife does the same, and even though we do mostly the same things every day, she always has more miles; I don’t get it? When someone asks me, ‘Do you know the time?’ I say ‘yes’ and walk away (March 17, 2022). Some don’t appreciate the humor in that response.” - Chuck

I appreciate that humor, Chuck, and I am going to give it a try. And regarding your Fitbit, strap it to the dog and get it running around the yard. - Shane

Have a fantastic Friday, and thanks for reading.

Girls on the Run benefits local youth

By Lindsey Giardino

According to Christa VanderLeest, director of Girls on the Run of Central Iowa, the program “envisions a world where all girls can know and activate their limitless potential and be free to boldly pursue their dreams.”

The eight-week program runs from March 28 to May 21 and inspires girls to be joyful, healthy and confident, using a fun, experience-based curriculum that creatively integrates movement. The program culminates in a celebratory 5K run at the Des Moines Capitol Complex that’s also open to the public.

Each team of Girls on the Run consists of eight to 20 girls and is led by volunteer coaches.

Norwalk resident Sarah DeKock, who is a board member for the Girls on the Run of Central Iowa Advisory Board and mother of a participant, got involved with the organization because its values — inspiring girls to be healthy, confident, kind and encouraging — align with hers.

YESTERDAY'S RIDDLE:
What do you call a male cat sleeping on a bed?
A HIM-ALAYAN! Gail Tomlinson admits she has heard this one before.
Others suggested A SLEEPING TOM: Peri Van Tassel, Ron Sorenson. (After a lengthy analysis, Ron surmised that Him-alayan was the better answer.)
Dewayne Johnson added, "Honestly, it doesn’t matter. They rarely come when you call them anyway."

TODAY'S RIDDLE:

A man walks into a pet store and asks for a dozen bees. The clerk carefully counts 13 bees out onto the counter. 'That’s one too many!' says the customer. What does the clerk say?
