Good Friday Morning to You!

Welcome to the Friday mailbag, where you will find some of the comments, questions and ideas sent recently by subscribers of this newsletter. They are all edited for space and clarity.

“I enjoyed your newsletter today (Implementing change, June 1, 2022) and will pass it on … those are great points to follow. … Best way to get things done is to talk directly to the person and say you need their help. Typically they buy in pretty quickly. They usually want to please you (well, not everyone). Thanks for giving us food for thought every single day!” - Deb

Thanks, Deb. Can I get your help? – Shane

“Excellent perspective (Wind & Fire, May 31, 2022)! On a note relative to your content, two of our three adult daughters are part of the great teacher resignation, for some of the reasons cited in the article. The good news for them is that teacher skills are highly applicable to many other professions; the bad news for us is, who the hell is going to educate our future grandchildren? Have a great day.” – Mary

Great to hear from you, Mary, and that is an excellent question. The educational system will certainly see its share of change. – Shane

“What is it with 10-year-olds? (Wind & Fire, May 31, 2022) One straight wind of 90 mph several (OK, almost 30) years ago while I (now retired) was working downtown Des Moines was watched by my son at home from the sliding glass window of our house as shredded metal from sheds in the neighborhood hit the house and a tree in the back yard was torn up a bit. My instructions were to get the dog and get into the basement. He got the dog; he didn’t go to the basement. His brothers in afterschool activities were doing appropriate interior-room, no-windows protocols. When the rest of us got home that afternoon, we were amazed at the damage a straight wind could do. I think the older boys were jealous of what the youngest got to see. Thanks for the memory.” - Donna

Young boys simply don’t listen very well. Or at least I didn’t. Thanks, Donna. – Shane

“Great tribute in your memorial day article (Decoration Day, May 30, 2022). Thank you. I love receiving this newsletter!” – Mona

Well, thank you, Mona. I appreciate the note, and I will keep sending! - Shane

Have a fantastic Friday, and thanks for reading.

Setting a good example

Giving back to others provides Leonard with a sense of purpose.

By Lindsey Giardino

This September will mark 20 years that Shelia Leonard has lived in Grimes.

In that time, she’s dedicated her time and talents to helping others. Leonard has enjoyed volunteering for such organizations as the Alzheimer’s Association, Diabetes Association and MS Moments — an Iowa nonprofit that provides grants to families living with multiple sclerosis.

“I had an aunt pass away from MS, and I have several dear friends who suffer from this disease, so I am really passionate about helping this organization,” Leonard says. “

People living with MS have to pay astronomical costs to simply slow the progression. I like how the money stays right here in Iowa to help those with MS and their families. I want to make sure my friends and others can live the best lives they can.”
