Good Wednesday Morning to You!

The twit is about to hit the fan. Or the tweet. Or whatever you want to call it.

If you haven’t heard by now, billionaire Elon Musk has threatened to pull out of his deal to buy social media giant Twitter because he is alleging that the company has been “suppressing” the number of fake accounts it has.

Yikes. This single move has those in the social media marketing world shaking in their bots. Yes, bots. For those of you who don’t know — or don’t care — bots are what this is all about.

Bots are fake accounts that are created for the purpose of advertising and spam. In other words, they are the root of a massive marketing scam that charges advertisers who are paying to reach humans but instead get bots. Musk says Twitter accounts may be as many as 20% bots. Twitter says it’s more like 5%. Musk is concerned. We all should be, too.

Through the years, I have given presentations on social media fraud to a variety of organizations. They were eye openers for many, but at the end of the day, few people truly cared. That is starting to change. Here are a few facts I shared then:

  • In 2018, Axios reported on a New York Times investigation that said more than 48 million Twitter users are fake and have been designed to simulate real people.
  • This isn’t just a Twitter problem. CNN reported that Facebook shut down 5.4 billion fake accounts in 2019. CNN also reported in 2012 that 25% of Facebook users admit to lying on their profiles, one of the ways that Facebook says it can target advertising messages.
  • Adweek noted in 2015 that despite most Facebook users thinking their posts go to all who follow them, only 2.6% of Facebook organic posts can actually be viewed.
  • In 2015, The Week shared that up to 62% of all web traffic comes from bots.
  • And maybe most alarming, emarketer.com stated that $42 billion was lost globally in digital ad fraud in 2019.

So the Twitter fake account news really isn’t surprising, and it may just be a ploy for Musk to negotiate a lower purchase price, but it should be a wake-up call for marketers and advertising agencies that have taken Twitter and other Big Tech company at their word.

Have a wonderful Wednesday, and thanks for reading.

Toddler deals with unknown allergies

Since birth, Connie Wright’s toddler, Jesse, has dealt with severe psoriasis — an inflammation that results from his allergies to food and environmental elements. He tends to break out more when he’s outdoors and seems to constantly have a runny nose. The spring and summer months tend to be the worst, Wright says, although Jesse flares up any time the seasons change.

“We have to limit him being able to play in the grass and dirt like other children because it causes more flareups,” she says. “And he always has to have shoes on. With such sensitive skin, we have to be careful with how many baths we give him, so that also limits his play. Of course, we’re always watching what he eats. He is only 2 so often doesn’t understand why he can’t roll around in the dirt and grass like other kids.”
