Good Friday Morning to You!

Welcome to the Friday mailbag, where you will find some of the comments, questions and ideas sent recently by subscribers of this newsletter. They are edited for space and clarity.

“My kids mock me unmercifully about my constant reminders to wear sunscreen (Sunburns, July 21, 2022). I grew up, as you did, without any thought to it or knowledge of it at all. After having my own painful experience and watching others suffer through worse, I finally became the family ‘Sunscreen Nazi,’ as called out by my kids, echoing the ‘Soup Nazi’ handle from ‘Seinfeld.’ ” – Bruce

No goop for you. – Shane

“Inflation is not going away any time soon (Get a job, July 26, 2022). People got large pay raises over the last year and will continue to get them since businesses can’t find people, so everything will continue to cost more. Truck drivers a year ago were making an average of $56,000. Now Walmart is starting them out at $110,000. And they still can’t find enough of them!” – Richard

I knew I should have gotten my commercial driver’s license. – Shane

“Thanks for your column on worker shortage (Get a job, July 26, 2022). I agree that it’s important to get folks back to work, and that we all notice the shortage. However, many businesses STILL pay the minimum wage — $7.25 per hour, a totally unlivable wage! Even with a $15/hour wage, a person can’t afford to live in a one-bedroom apartment in Des Moines. Most rents have increased substantially, and housing assistance has been reduced, creating more unsheltered folks. And, studies show that the cost of child care for workers is akin to paying college tuition. Try to fit that into a budget when one makes $10-15 an hour. Sigh.” – Judy

Good points, Judy. Some businesses are certainly doing quite well. Meanwhile, others are struggling. And although they may exist, I don’t know a single one that is paying minimum wage. – Shane

“What? You didn’t listen to the Wolf Man directly from KXRF in Del Rio, Texas (Obsolete, July 28, 2022). So, if fax machines are so obsolete, why is it that if you need to get your medical records sent from one doctor to another, the only way is by fax?” – Bill

Well, at least the Big Tech companies aren’t tracking data from fax machines. I think. – Shane

Have a fantastic Friday, and thanks for reading.

Music Under the Stars

Urbandale’s Holthaus a member of one of Iowa’s longest-running community groups

By Darren Tromblay

Seventy-five years is a long time for any community group to remain in existence, but Des Moines can boast of at least one.

Music Under the Stars is one of the longest running summer band concert series in Iowa. The 2022 concerts were held on Sundays from June 12 to July 10 at the Iowa Capitol grounds.
“The concerts capture the tradition and nostalgia relating back to military and marching bands, such as the United State Marine Band led by John Philip Sousa and the circus bands represented by Karl King,” says Ben Holthaus of Urbandale, a Music Under the Stars member.
