Good Friday Morning to You!

Welcome to the Friday mailbag, where you will find some of the comments, questions and ideas sent recently by subscribers of this newsletter. They are edited for space and clarity.

“Your column today is point on (NFL egos, Sept. 27, 2022); many (not all, of course) of the athletes are just way out of control with their egos, and this is, in fact, why I refuse to watch even one minute of any pro ball game. Even golf and bowling and tennis, etc. are way out of control. It's ridiculous. Actually, it's shameful.” - Steve

The leagues could fix this all overnight, if they really wanted to. - Shane

“Mention the NFL and players today vs. players in the past, I immediately think of the ABC Movie of the Week ‘Brian’s Song,’  representing NFL past (NFL egos, Sept. 27, 2022). The original 1971 version starring James Caan as Brian and Billy Dee Williams as Gale Sayers. For a couple of bucks, this can be streamed. Your most expense will be for Kleenex!” – Diane

Lando Calrissian was Gale Sayers? I’ve got a bad feeling about this. - Shane

“Your thoughts on deadlines reminded me of a story about my uncle's ongoing teasing of his sister (my aunt) because she could never get to work, to church or to any family or school function on time (Deadlines, Sept. 28, 2022). Always 10, 20 or even 45 minutes late. Being prompt himself on every level, he teased her endlessly that she would be late for her own funeral. She didn't mind the teasing because she knew he was right, to a certain extent. Years passed, and Auntie unexpectedly ended up in the hospital. When she was moved to intensive care, she knew she had just days to act. She arranged to have a special card made up just for my uncle. It was sealed with instructions that it be given to him immediately following her funeral service. He looked surprised when a family member delivered the envelope to him as we all left the church. When he opened it, a tear came to his eye. The message? ‘I always knew I would be on time just this once.’ ” - John

That’s a wonderful story, John. Thank you for sharing it. - Shane

“Good writing takes you to memories and emotions that you don't think about every day (Neighbors, Oct. 5, 2022). While reading your column, I mentally went up and down our small town street in the 1960s and could remember names (or those we called names), personalities and secrets better left alone. Also, the wonderful people and the freedom we had as kids to be kids in safety. Thanks!" - Ann

We need to remember those memories, while we still can. - Shane

Have a fantastic Friday, and thanks for reading.

Meet Cassie Farley

Making first grade fun and engaging

By T.K. West

Cassie Farley grew up in Runnels, graduated from Southeast Polk Community School District, and earned a teaching degree at Iowa State University. She has since returned to her alma mater where she has worked at Centennial, Altoona, Clay and Runnells elementary schools. Farley says the district is a great place to work because of the amazing community. She also says it means a lot to be back in the district where her education started.

“The district provides us the opportunities to learn and grow and provides a collaborative culture. I’ve also experienced this district as a student and educator so I’m a big Ram fan,” Farley says.
