Good Thursday Morning to You!

With such an abundance of great letters stockpiling, we are offering the Friday mailbag on Thursday and Friday of this week.

“Bye-bye toothbrush, towels, pillows, mattress, slippers, sunscreen, mustard, ketchup, BBQ sauce and pickles (Expiration dates, Oct. 26, 2022). And I will water our plants with bottled water. How have we survived? The roll-off dumpster will be arriving in a couple days. NOT!” - Brent

Pickles? I thought the whole idea of something being “pickled” was to avoid expiring? - Shane

“In my opinion, the expiration of towels and pillows is a big joke and clearly a marketing ploy (Expiration dates, Oct. 26, 2022). If they are properly washed and dried, they will last for many years. If they ever lose fluffiness, just donate them to a thrift store or homeless shelter. These non-perishable foods really do last indefinitely when stored unopened in a cool, dry, dark spot. Baking soda. Beans and legumes, Corn syrup. Hard liquor. Honey. Maple syrup. Salt. Spices. Sugar. Vinegar. Vanilla extract. White rice.” – George

Well, I know what I am having for dinner now. - Shane

“Regarding the recommendation of getting rid of bath towels when they lose absorbency, I wonder how many people know that using a fabric softener on them embeds a wax that reduces their absorbency (Expiration dates, Oct. 26, 2022). So never using a fabric softener and drying them in a dryer will keep them soft, fluffy and absorbent.” - Margaret

And who doesn't like soft, fluffy and absorbent? - Shane

“Shane, I really liked your column today (Driver’s education, Oct. 31, 2022). It brought back memories of my drivers ed class with Mr. Griener. Three things I learned still stick with me to this day. The first is how to parallel park. I learned this in downtown Des Moines. On Locust in front of the Ruan Center. The second lesson he taught me is that if you're going the speed limit in the left lane on the interstate, you are actually a traffic hazard. Finally, the third, and most important lesson he taught was what the passing gear was and was not. The ‘P’ on the shift column does not stand for passing gear! A student a few years ahead of me learned this lesson the hard way.” - Boyd

Ouch. In that case, I think the P stood for problem. - Shane

“My DE instructor, Lou, was an ex-Marine corps sergeant who had become quite rotund since his service days (Driver’s education, Oct. 31, 2022). He would frequently remind us that his training would allow him to ‘crawl on the ground lower than anyone in this class!’ I doubt that was true at the time, and I don’t remember what prompted this frequent statement, but I do recall it was made often. Not sure what that had to do with driving?” - Chuck

It's a good thing you didn’t ask. - Shane

Have a thoughtful Thursday, and thanks for reading.

From the Food Dude

C Fresh Market, Iowa's top international grocery store, has removed all houseware and utensils to enlarge its frozen seafood and fish section. You could try a new fish every day for a month and still have more to choose. Also, the store has the first selection of Jinro Soju, a smooth booze made with sweet potatoes and bamboo charcoal filtration. It is the best-selling alcohol in Asia and is usually consumed neat.
