Good Monday Morning to You!

I recently listened to a wonderful address from Lt. General Ron Dardis, who is now the general manager at Hyperion Field Club. As part of his presentation, he shared what he calls the “Characteristics of Effective Leadership.” In this, he defined leadership as the ability to motivate and inspire your people to enthusiastically embrace the core values of the organization, and, together, as a team, accomplish its mission, vision and goals. He said leadership can be summed up in 5 Cs: Calling, Communication, Creativity, Caring and Consistency. These relate to all of us, whether we consider ourselves leaders or not, especially during this time of Thanksgiving.

He shared how the sense of calling is to understand the leadership role. He expressed how the ability to communicate is a must. He stressed how creativity in problem solving means one must be innovative with issues and understand that no one size fits all. He disclosed how caring is important as one must be compassionate as part of an enduring style of leadership. And he revealed how consistency means a leader must be flexible, but steady, with integrity being non-negotiable. Here are a few more of his leadership tips:

1. Put the team first. Work hard, and good things will happen. Be the best you can be, as it will prepare you for opportunities — and the unexpected.

2. Treat one another with dignity and respect. In other words, treat people the way you would like to be treated.

3. Keep things in perspective. Keep God in your life, and remember that your family is your greatest treasure.

4. Leave something behind. We must mentor the young men and women on our team.

5. Nobody makes it on their own. Alongside every great achiever are caring people offering encouragement, support and assistance.

6. Look back at your mentors, coaches, family, friends and parents. They gave so much and asked for so little in return.

7. Help others get started. Share your knowledge, experience and enthusiasm. Your reward is how you feel within.

Thank you, General Dardis. Have a marvelous Monday, and thanks for reading.

Making new memories with grandkids

Paula and Dan James’ time in Adel spans decades.

By Lindsey Giardino

Paula James and her husband, Dan, are long-time residents of Adel. Paula moved to town when she was a freshman in high school after her father got a job at the Redfield Brick and Tile Company. Dan, who is retired from the Air National Guard in Des Moines, grew up in De Soto and moved to Adel after the couple married in 1977. They’ve remained in town ever since.

The couple’s home, which they bought in 1986, is only their second one. It’s a place filled with years and years of memories.

“We raised three boys in this home,” Paula says. “We are making new memories with seven grandsons.”
